Cycling Reps

The Difference between CrossFit & Weightlifting

KNOW WHAT YOU’RE LIFTING FOR! Lifting vs. cycling reps, what do these two terms mean and what distinguishes one practice from the other? Parisa lives in the thick of both the weightlifting and CrossFit worlds, making her a fantastic person so deliver this quick tip to give you guys a hand at making your lifting style more effective for your chosen sport.

Cycling reps is a method of moving a barbell characterized by moving through reps continuously using Olympic style lifts which is unique to CrossFit. Lifting on the other hand refers to the approach used by weightlifters in which executing each lift is treated as a an important, individual practice from set up to finish no matter how many reps comprise a set.

One of the main distinctions between weightlifting and cycling reps in CrossFit is the aim of the exercise:

Weightlifters tend to train with a specific focus on technical proficiency and moving weights with precision. One of the many goals of lifting is for each movement to look the same. In order to do achieve this training goal the sets have significantly less reps, athletes reset for each lift as if they were approaching it as a singular important lift, they move their feet, and they rest longer in between sets in comparison to barbell cycling.

CrossFit on the other hand often requires athletes to become as efficient as possible at moving weights very quickly, this is typical in WODs/workouts where the aim is to complete a given amount of reps against the clock. As a result athletes tend to leave their feet in the same place and their reps transition from one to the next continuously rather than having a distinct start an end point. As these movements are often executed under cardiovascular fatigue for some each lift may look different as this isn’t the focus on the large set.

Do you know what you’re lifting for? We hope this quick tip helps you guys to approach the barbell in a suitable style based on the sort of training you’re doing!
