The other day I was at work and thought it would be fun to revisit what we did in episode 2 of the podcast. a Nationals predictions episode.
Good luck to all the lifters that are competing this weekend! May all your lifts be light and all your lights be white!
I really meant to do a whole lot of research before we did this one but we just based all our predictions off what we knew of the lifters. Apologies if I get any details wrong.

Episode 32
I’ve been trying to organise an interview with Dr. Robert Mitchell, AKA ‘The Doc’ for a couple of months now and I’m so happy to finally have him on for a chat! Doc has been in the sport for a very long time, and has been the Head Coach of the highly prestigious Burwood Weightlifting Club.
The Burwood Weightlifting Club has been around since 1967 and is one of the oldest clubs still running in Australia! (Although Doc moved the club in 2016 due to Burwood PCYC shutting down).
In this episode we talk about all things weightlifting. How Doc got into the sport through powerlifting, how he ended up Burwood Weightlifting, how he fell into coaching and how he’s been involved in the sport since.
Thanks Doc for joining me this week!

2017 Australian Weightlifting National Championships
2017 Australian Weightlifting National Championships
This year the 2017 Australian Weightlifting National Championships were held in the sunny state of Tasmania. Kush, Jack and Andy all qualified as well as our close friends Yannick and Lady from Shred Barbell Club.
Kush dropped weight once again to the U48kg class in the hopes of coming third. unfortunately we missed out, but as usual we’ve had an awesome learning experience and I can’t weight to see her get back to training and come back next year bigger and better than ever!
This was Jack’s first Nationals, and definitely not his last. He already has the strength to not only qualify and do really well on the national stage, we now just have to make him consistent in his technique so that we can hit his best numbers on the platform! Really proud of you Jack, stepping out of your comfort zone and giving this ‘trash comp’ a real go 😀
Can’t wait for next years nationals!
Check out the video below if you missed out on watching the team lift. I’ve added my own commentary into the video. so you have a better idea of whats happening.

The 2017 NSW Weightlifting State Championships Draft Schedule has been released by NSWWA. It’s being held held next Saturday the 8th of April at Olympic Park in the NSWWA High Performance Centre. We have a fair few lifters competing. For some it’s their first time, for others it is another chance to score a big total and a few lifters are putting it all on the line to try and qualify for the Australian Weightlifting National Championships in June.
As usual the lure of team shields, medals and prizes is sure to draw out the best lifting, and with a power packed schedule it looks like it’s going to be a great day!

If you are in Tassie or were waiting for a reason to book your next Tassie Trip, it’s time to do so! If you are a competitor who has hit the qualifying totals – within the qualifying periods set by the Australian Weightlifting Federation (AWF), You can now register.
You can register for both the Senior and Junior Championships with your club through your State body. For example, a lifter that is registered with RAW Barbell Club can register through New South Wales Weightlifting Association (NSWWA). All clubs should have the relevant forms. If you don’t just ask Linda from NSWWA or ask me and I’ll intro you to her ☺
The Qualifying period is 5th August, 2016 – 9th April, 2017. Unfortunately if you live in NSW your last chance to qualify is the NSW State Championships that is next week (8/04/17).

Ralph Cashman Open Competition 2017
Ralph Cashman Open Competition 2017
Ralph Cashman Open Competition 2017
The team made their way down to the NSW State Sport Centre to participate in the Ralph Cashman Open Competition 2017. In a competition that brought athletes from all spans of the athletic spectrum, it was nice to see our little club represented by 5 lifters. Bo, Carlene, Elisha, Kush and Sue did us very proud.
For Bo and Elisha this was their first ever weightlifting competition. Both performed like champions hitting PR’s and getting a majority of their lifts.
Carlene was all business today. Warming up and competing like a pro. she hit all her snatches and clean & Jerks going 6 for 6. A comp PR on the way to peaking for her World Masters Debut was just cherry on the cake!
Kush came out swinging for a big snatch, but it just wasn’t there today. But that’s ok, with no taper and a fairly heavy week beforehand, I’m sure we’ll see some big lifts at the Australian International. She made up for it hitting some big clean & jerks though, can’t be unhappy with that.
Sue had her mind set on breaking some NSW State Masters records. She did this easily on her second lifts and then went on to hit some bigger ones for her final attempts.

Masters Weightlifting 2017 Calendar
Masters Weightlifting 2017
I Ended in my last post by making quick note of Masters Athletes in weightlifting. If you’re an older athlete (35 years and above) there has never been a better time to get into the sport of Masters Weightlifting 2017.
Sue Competing at the Australian Masters Weightlifting Championships
In Olympic Weightlifting the Masters age category starts at 35 years old, and go up in 5 year increments. If you compete in weightlifting you will be ranked and have a chance to compete against athletes in your same age range.
the age groups are as follows:
Masters Weightlifting 2017 Age Groupings
- Men [35-39] | [40-44] | [45-49] | [50-54] | [55-59] | [60-64] | 65-69] | [70-74] | [75-79] | [80+]
- Women [35-39] | [40-44] | [45-49] | [50-54] | [55-59] | [60-64] | 65-69] | [70+]
There are plenty of competitions for masters athletes in Australia and you can make a serious goal to qualify and compete at both national and international competitions. 2017 Australian Weightlifting Calendar
2017 Australian Weightlifting Calendar
The Australian Weightlifting Federation (AWF) has published the 2017 Australian Weightlifting Calendar, with all the big national and international events up for the new year. With it, the AWF has made some big changes to the qualification and grading standards that it has used in the past. I’m pretty happy with the direction that the AWF is taking with the grading standards, especially at the national levels (where I’m most familiar with). With the explosion of growth in the sport of Olympic weightlifting, it makes sense make it harder to qualify events like the Australian Open and National Championships. what this means is that in most cases the qualifying totals have gone up, to reflect the performances at the 2016 National Championships. This will challenge athletes to shoot for higher totals in order to qualify for national events (which is harder but definitely achievable).
—–>>> 2017 AWF Weightlifting calendar <<<—–
What is great is there are loads of open and club competitions to do though. Although it’s not compulsory to do so. I’d like to see as many people as possible to register with NSWWA, and start competing. It is a great way to measure your progress, it tests your mental strength and will allow you to hit your goals that much faster.
Check out the calendar below to see some of the NSWWA Comp dates:

Karen Competing at a local ‘All Comers Competition’
As much as I like the ‘direction’ the AWF is heading in, the grading table I discussed before is a little cumbersome and complicated. So if you’re serious about weightlifting and are looking to take that extra step. You can set a goal to qualify for a national or even international competition! All it takes is a little talent, some hard work, commitment and time reach some frankly awesome goals.
Check out the big comps that are on this year below and see how close you are to qualifying for these events:
